I was 18 years old and played in an orchestra. I was asked to play at a big black-tie party that all the city's business owners were attending.
I was vain. Extremely vain. And blind. Even more blind than vain, if that's possible. I never wore my glasses except to (1) Drive, or (2) Read music.
I headed into the very crowded, dimly-lit party in my black gown. I could hardly see a thing and was hoping to find my way over to my fellow orchestra members.
People were standing around with cocktails and fancy h'ors doeuvres, dressed to the nines and acting a wee bit snobby. I was already intimidated.
As I made my way across the room, I came upon a woman, also in a long black gown, who was standing directly in front of me. I didn't make eye contact with her as I quickly jumped out of her way. Except, she jumped in the same direction I did. "Oh! Excuse me!" I nervously said, as I went back the other direction. She moved in the same direction with me. "Oh, gosh! I'm so sorry!" I said again, noticing that she was not saying a word, and making me even more uncomfortable than I already was. We danced back and forth together--moving perfectly in sync--five or six times. I was nervously saying how sorry I was, over and over again, and she was continuing to not say a WORD. I was dying of embarrassment and didn't know how I'd get away from this WOMAN who kept moving in the same direction I was!
People around me were noticing. I saw disapproving, odd looks in my direction. Looks as if something were terribly wrong. I saw tilted heads, mouths half-open, and people who seemed to be on the verge of saying something to me...
As I looked back, I decided to make eye contact with this snobby, non-apologetic, speechless woman... and that's when I realized what was going on: I had been dancing back and forth with my *own reflection* in a mirrored pillar that was smack dab in the middle of the room.
SOOOOO Who won? Who won?
